It is actually the name of a mythical creature seen on the grounds of Wat Pratat Doi Suthep, a temple on top of Doi Suthep, a mountain just behind Chiang Mai city.
Chiang Mai is over 700 years old and this temple is said to have been founded in 1383. Most of the present buildings are probably somewhat newer than that and have been modified and renovated over the years as the temple has also been damaged by earthquakes.

As a door guard, the Mom (pronounced "mawm"), may just be saying, "Take your shoes off before you enter!" As is customary for all Thai homes and temples.
